Almost every week, someone at BNI or a chamber event asks me some version of the same question: "Which AI tool should I actually be using?"

It's usually an owner who's been pitched three apps that month. One promises to answer every call, one writes estimates from a photo, and one does something with reviews. They all say they'll save ten hours a week. None of them say what they cost until you've handed over your email.

I'd give my honest answer over coffee, and then think about the twenty other contractors who were going to get the same pitch and never get the coffee. So I built something for them.

[**Houston Trades AI**](https://www.houstontradesai.com/?ref=blog.outcomeorbit.ai) is a free guide to the AI tools Houston contractors are paying for, organized by trade. It launched with 25 tools across HVAC, plumbing, roofing, pest control and electrical.

**What you'll find on every tool**

Each one gets the same treatment:

- What it does, in plain English
- What it costs, with the date the price was last checked and a link to where the price came from
- Which kind and size of shop it fits
- Where it pays back, labeled as an estimate with the math shown
- A "Skip it if" line, because no tool is right for every shop

Each trade also has one **Our Pick**. Nobody can pay for that. If sponsors ever come on board, they'll sit in their own clearly labeled section and never touch the rankings.

**Why organize it by trade?**

A roofer and an HVAC owner don't have the same problems, so they shouldn't get the same list. The roofer is chasing estimates and storm leads. The HVAC shop in August is drowning in calls and has a newer tech stuck in an attic who needs help. The generic "Top 10 AI tools for small business" lists don't help either of them, and most of those lists are paid placements anyway.

**The fun part: it mostly runs itself**

This is a side project I built between client work, and honestly, it's also an experiment I've been wanting to run.

AI agents do most of the legwork. They research new tools, re-check prices against the vendors' own pages, flag anything that's gone stale, and draft new entries for the next trade. The site went from an idea to live in a few weeks, and it keeps growing without me rebuilding it every time a vendor changes its pricing page.

It's the same idea I bring to my clients' businesses: let AI handle the repetitive research and upkeep so people can spend their time on the work that needs them.

**What's next**

A new trade roughly every month. Irrigation and landscaping, painting and pool service are on the list. There's also a free weekly email called **The Dispatch** with new tools, price changes and pick updates for your trade.

**How you can help**

This works better with more Houston contractors in it, so here's my ask:

- If you run a trades business, take a look at your trade's page and tell me what's missing or wrong. I'd rather hear it from you than find out later.
- If you know a contractor who keeps getting pitched AI tools, send them the link.
- If you use a tool that's earned its keep, I want to know about it.

And if you'd like help figuring out which two or three tools fit your own shop, you can request an AI Quick Wins Session right from the site.
